As much as I think the open access of online journals like PLoS ONE is a good thing for the scientific community, I have some reservations about possible conflicts of interest when you’re charging authors $1,350 to get their work published. Also, I know the focus with this kind of thing is quantity over quality, and opening up a comments section to allow professionals in the field scrutinize the work, but I’m afraid of what might happen when laypeople start citing substantially flawed studies that made it into publication here without any concept of the surrounding post-publication discussion.
